A beautifully detailed Georgian antique brooch, dating to circa 1810–1830, featuring an ancient Ouroboros-style serpent encircling a warm, luminous natural citrine.
Crafted in 9ct gold, professionally tested, the serpent forms an elegant oval around the central gemstone, with its head meeting its tail to create an almost continuous circle. The Ouroboros is an ancient symbol traditionally associated with eternity, the cycle of life and renewal.
The entire body of the serpent is finely engraved with delicate cross-hatched scale detailing, extending from head to tail. Despite the brooch measuring only approximately 2cm, the tiny scales, head and eyes remain remarkably well defined, demonstrating the intricate hand craftsmanship characteristic of early 19th-century jewellery.
At the centre is a natural citrine, antique cut with broad facets that reflect beautiful shades of golden yellow, honey and champagne depending on the light.
The gemstone is mounted in a traditional closed-back setting, a construction frequently encountered in Georgian jewellery. Given the closed setting, the stone may possibly have been foil-backed, a technique historically used to enhance colour and reflection; however, this cannot be confirmed without disturbing the original setting.
