Mid-Victorian 15ct Gold Natural Garnet Tassel Locket Brooch, Circa 1870, Original Antique Box

A magnificent mid-Victorian brooch combining richly coloured natural garnets, intricate goldwork, a complete articulated tassel fringe and a private locket compartment.

Dating to circa 1870, the brooch is crafted in professionally tested 15ct gold. Its circular body features a finely balanced radial design, decorated with delicate applied scroll wirework and centred with a round natural cabochon garnet measuring approximately 10mm in diameter.

The garnet displays a deep wine-red colour, becoming beautifully luminous as light passes through its domed surface. It is framed by a petal-shaped surround and fine rope-twist gold border.

Below the circular body hangs an elaborate fringe of articulated gold chains and graduated pointed drops. A longer central chain supports a second natural cabochon garnet, oval in shape and measuring approximately 10 × 7mm, finished with a further pointed gold drop.

This type of articulated fringe was particularly fashionable during the mid-Victorian period, reflecting the era’s archaeological-revival and exotic decorative influences. When worn, the tassels move gently with the wearer, catching the light and creating a fluid golden shimmer.

Brooches of this scale were traditionally worn at the centre of a high neckline or upon the upper bodice, where the circular form created a strong focal point and the long fringe enhanced the vertical line of the dress.

The reverse features an opening locket compartment, traditionally intended to hold a miniature portrait, a lock of hair or another personal keepsake. It gives the brooch an intimate sentimental dimension beyond its striking decorative presence.

Remarkably, all of the delicate tassels remain complete after more than 150 years. The brooch is accompanied by its original antique box.
