Georgian Silhouette Portrait Locket by John Miers c.1790 in 9ct Gold Frame, Double-Sided Glass
DESCRIPTION:
A refined and historically significant Georgian portrait locket, circa 1790, attributed to the celebrated English silhouette artist John Miers (1758–1821). Miers was the most successful silhouette painter of the late 18th century, renowned for his precision and elegant profile renderings. His works were highly prized in fashionable society, with patrons including members of the aristocracy.
This finely preserved example features:
• Hand-painted silhouette portrait of a gentleman, executed in jet-black pigment on ivory, with delicate attention to hair and clothing details.
• Signed “Miers” in the lower left corner.
• 9ct gold frame (tested), hinged to open and fitted with double-sided convex glass — originally designed to hold portraits or mementos on both sides.
• Original textured backing and pristine interior lining.
The portrait remains crisp and striking, capturing the sitter’s profile in timeless elegance. Miers’ masterful use of contrast and contour gives the image a refined dignity, characteristic of his best work.
• Materials: 9ct gold, glass, ivory (historic pre-1947)
• Artist: John Miers (English, 1758–1821)
• Dimensions: 6.4 × 4.3 × 0.4 cm
• Weight: 25.8g
• Condition: Excellent antique condition with original surfaces intact; hinge and glass in fine working order.
A superb collector’s piece — wearable, displayable, and steeped in late Georgian artistry.
