The twelve signs of the zodiac encircle this rare and imposing Victorian sterling silver tea and coffee service.

Made principally in 1882 by the renowned British silversmiths Elkington and assayed in London, the service comprises a coffee pot, teapot, hot-water jug, sugar bowl and milk jug. The hot-water jug dates to 1879 and was made by the same firm, with matching form, decoration and workmanship throughout.

Each piece has a generously rounded body articulated by a series of richly decorated bands. The lids, shoulders, bodies and spouts are covered with intricate low-relief and chased ornament, combining flowers, scrolling foliage, diagonal patterns and formal leaf borders. Despite the abundance of decoration, the design remains balanced and carefully ordered.

The most distinctive feature is the continuous zodiac frieze surrounding the bodies. Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius and the remaining signs appear within a sequence of arched panels. Each figure is individually modelled in fine relief, creating the effect of a Victorian celestial chart wrapped around the silver.

The pieces also retain the original owner’s heraldic arms. Set among the zodiac panels, these engraved emblems lend the service the character of a specially commissioned family possession and offer a glimpse into the social world for which such substantial silver was created.

The sugar bowl and milk jug have richly gilded interiors. Their warm gold tones form a striking contrast with the cool silver exterior and emphasise the depth of the surrounding decoration.

The coffee pot and hot-water jug rise in tall, elegant profiles with slender necks and elongated, upward-curving spouts. The teapot has a broader horizontal silhouette, while the sweeping handles are fitted with pale heat-insulating spacers that introduce a lighter visual rhythm to the substantial silver forms.

With a combined weight of approximately 2,459g, this is a notably substantial service. More remarkably, all five pieces remain housed in their original fitted oak case. The interior is lined in green fabric and individually shaped to hold each piece securely, helping to preserve the complete service for well over a century.

Victorian five-piece sterling silver services are increasingly difficult to find. A complete example combining a zodiac theme, heraldic provenance, substantial weight and its original fitted case is particularly rare.

Condition

Very good antique condition. The decoration remains clear and well defined, and the gilded interiors retain a rich, warm colour. The pieces show natural surface marks and light signs of use consistent with their age. The original oak case also retains age-related wear.
