Late 19th-Century Dutch 833 Silver Swing-Handle Teapot

A rare late nineteenth-century Dutch silver teapot of exceptional decorative richness, distinguished by its sculptural ornament and unusual original wooden swing handle.

Crafted in Dutch second-standard silver of 833 fineness, the generously rounded body is covered with high-relief flowers, scrolling foliage and shell motifs. The recessed grounds have been densely worked with fine hammering, producing a subtly darkened matte texture that heightens the brilliance and depth of the polished relief.

At the centre of each side is a large flower basket overflowing with blossoms and foliage—a richly ornamental motif particularly fashionable during the late nineteenth century. The decoration flows continuously around the body, giving the teapot a beautifully modelled, almost sculptural presence.

The spout is formed as a classical deity holding a vessel, while four expressive figural mask feet support the body. A standing lion crowns the removable lid, completing the design with an appropriately proud and commanding flourish.

Its original dark wooden swing handle is an especially distinctive feature. Rarely seen on Western silver teapots of this form, it introduces a striking contrast of colour and texture while lending the piece an intriguing cross-cultural character.

The lid can be removed completely, and the interior has been carefully cleaned. The teapot remains in very good antique condition, with its elaborate decoration, fittings and original wooden handle well preserved.
