1852 Victorian Sterling Silver Mug with Gilt Interior | George Angell, London | Engraved Floral Decoration
Elegant architectural lines soften into a gracefully flared, scalloped base.
Made in London in 1852 by George Angell, this Victorian sterling silver mug combines a tall faceted body with an undulating rim and a distinctive spreading base. Gothic Revival-inspired arch borders sit alongside Rococo Revival foliage and a generous C-scroll handle, reflecting the eclectic character of Victorian decorative design.
Vertical divisions give the body a clear rhythm, with each panel engraved with symmetrical flowers and curling leaves. Fine parallel lines fill the floral motifs, contrasting with the polished silver and revealing delicate changes in texture as the light moves across the surface.
The broad scalloped base is a particularly striking feature. Its curved sections spread out like the hem of a flowing skirt, outlined by raised borders and joined by small foliate details. The shape echoes the rim above, balancing the upright body with a softer, expansive outline.
The substantial scroll handle is decorated with flowing leaves and curled terminals. One cartouche retains an engraved monogram, preserving a personal connection to a former owner.
Inside, warm gilding contrasts beautifully with the silver exterior and highlights the faceted construction. Approximately 13cm high, with a capacity of around 700ml when filled to the brim, the mug has a generous presence.
A complete set of London hallmarks is struck to the underside, recording its sterling silver standard, assay office, date and maker.
