Georgian 18ct Gold Natural Seed Pearl Double-Sided Portrait Locket Pendant, Circa 1800–1820, Original Antique Box
£1,550.00
A beautiful Georgian sentimental jewel, created to preserve a private memory beneath glass.
Dating to circa 1800–1820, this finely handcrafted English pendant is made in professionally tested 18ct gold. Its circular frame is surrounded by graduated natural seed pearls, each individually held within a gold setting and separated by delicate gold beadwork.
Both sides feature thick, raised antique glass. The gold frame on the reverse opens outwards through a miniature side hinge, creating a transparent compartment between the two glass panels.
This space may originally have held a hand-painted portrait miniature, a lock of hair, initials or another personal keepsake. Two different elements could also have been placed back-to-back and viewed from opposite sides. The original contents are now absent.
Before photography, jewels of this kind were worn to preserve the likeness or hair of a loved one. They could serve as mourning jewels, but were also exchanged between lovers, spouses and family members as intimate tokens of affection and remembrance.
The warm 18ct gold, softly luminous seed pearls and beautifully raised glass give the pendant a refined and quietly romantic character. It is accompanied by its original antique box, adding to its historical completeness and collectability.
