Carnelian Scarab Intaglio Bracelet | Etruscan Revival Style | Natural Turquoise & Agarwood
£495.00
Warm, translucent carnelian meets bright turquoise and richly textured agarwood in a bracelet centred on a carved scarab seal.
The natural carnelian displays glowing orange-red tones, with subtle variations in colour as the light passes through the stone. Its domed face is carved as a scarab beetle, with incised details defining the thorax and wing cases.
Turn the stone over to discover an intaglio-carved classical figure within a finely hatched oval border. The winged figure steps forward, extending one arm while holding a suspended vessel in the other hand. The recessed carving offers a different view of this small, intriguing object.
The design follows the Etruscan tradition of scarab-shaped engraved gems. It may be a 19th-century Italian Grand Tour or archaeological revival piece; this is a stylistic attribution, and its precise date and origin remain unconfirmed.
Symbolism
In ancient Egypt, the scarab was associated with Khepri, the god of the rising sun. The beetle’s movement of a rounded ball was linked to the sun’s daily journey, making the scarab a symbol of renewal, rebirth and protection.
The winged figure on the reverse recalls classical imagery associated with Eros and the Etruscan Lasa figures, some of whom carry vessels for perfumed oils. Its precise identity remains uncertain, but the image invites associations with love, beauty and care.
The carnelian has been incorporated into a later bracelet setting with two natural turquoise beads and 23 agarwood beads, strung on elastic. The turquoise provides a vivid contrast, while the dark brown wood brings warmth and natural texture.
