Antique Natural Pearl & Old Mine Cut Diamond Memorial Ring | 18ct Gold | London Hallmarks | Circa 1830s

Four softly lustrous pearls surround an antique diamond, bringing together the warmth of gold and the gentle light of natural pearls in a ring made for remembrance.

Dating to circa the 1830s, this English 18ct gold memorial ring has a graceful four-petal cluster design. Four natural pearls, each approximately 4mm, display subtle differences in shape and colour, with creamy white and pale grey tones and delicate iridescence. Their individual surface textures add to the character of the piece.

At the centre sits a natural old mine cut diamond measuring approximately 2.1mm, accompanied by four smaller diamonds nestled between the pearls. The central diamond’s raised crown and antique facets give it a distinctive character, with shifting reflections that complement the softer pearl lustre.

Scalloped gold edges frame the cluster, while engraved decoration and curling details extend across the broad shoulders, gradually tapering into the band.

Inside the shank is a full set of British hallmarks for 18ct gold, including the London assay mark. The date letter is worn and cannot be read confidently. A separate memorial inscription includes the year 1833 and “Obt”, a conventional abbreviation referring to the death of the person commemorated; the remaining wording is partly indistinct.

The ring is attributed to circa the 1830s based on its design and inscription. The engraved year 1833 is recorded as a memorial date, rather than a confirmed hallmark date or year of manufacture.

Lettering also survives around the outside of the band. The original enamel has been lost, revealing the gold lettering and underlying surface. Together with the interior inscription, these details preserve evidence of its history as a mourning and remembrance ring.

A personal keepsake from another lifetime, with a sentiment that remains even where the words have softened with age.
