Antique 1834 Sterling Silver Gilt Cream Jug by James Charles Edington, London – William IV Floral Repoussé

A magnificent and exceptionally substantial William IV sterling silver cream jug, crafted in London in 1834 by the distinguished silversmith James Charles Edington.

The interior is richly gilded, creating a beautiful contrast between the warm golden bowl and the bright silver exterior. Its generous weight and sculptural decoration reflect the exceptional quality associated with fine nineteenth-century London silver.

The body has a rounded, lobed form, divided into elegant panels richly decorated with high-relief roses, flowers and scrolling foliage. The raised floral ornament stands prominently against finely textured backgrounds, producing remarkable depth and changing patterns of light and shadow.

The deeply shaped, undulating rim resembles the petals of an opening flower and flows naturally into a broad, elegantly curved pouring lip. A tall scrolling handle embellished with foliate details complements the floral decoration, while the substantial petal-shaped foot gives the jug a beautifully balanced and stable profile.

Weighing approximately 370 grams, the jug feels exceptionally solid and substantial in the hand. The underside retains clear London hallmarks, including the maker’s mark for James Charles Edington and the lowercase date letter “t” for 1834.

A superb example of William IV silver, combining generous proportions, rich gilding and highly sculptural floral decoration.

Why You’ll Love It

This is an unusually substantial cream jug, weighing approximately 370 grams despite its relatively compact proportions. Its rich high-relief floral decoration gives the piece an almost sculptural presence, while the gilded interior introduces warmth and opulence.

The combination of silver and gold, together with its dramatic floral form, makes it equally beautiful as a functional piece of antique silver or as an elegant decorative object.

Condition

The jug remains in excellent antique condition. Its structure is sound, the handle and foot are secure, and the floral decoration remains crisp and well defined.

The silver surface retains a beautiful natural lustre, with light marks, gentle wear and patination consistent with its age and history. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
