1868 Victorian Sterling Silver Gilt Basket by Frazer & Haws, London

Delicate floral engraving surrounds a warm golden interior.

Made in London in 1868, this elegant sterling silver basket bears the name of Frazer & Haws. Its oval, boat-shaped bowl rises gently at either end, resting on a spreading oval pedestal foot. A slender swing handle completes its graceful silhouette.

The exterior is finely engraved with flowers, leafy swags and pendant ornaments. Beneath the beaded rim, a continuous band of oval motifs with star-like centres brings a pleasing rhythm to the decoration. The beaded edge is repeated around the foot, drawing the design together.

The gilded interior retains a bright, warm colour, contrasting beautifully with the silver exterior. Small enough for an intimate table setting, the basket makes an attractive display piece and could also hold sweets or small treats.

The underside retains the historic trade inscription:

FRAZER & HAWS
FROM GARRARDS
31 REGENT STREET

Garrard’s history dates to 1735. Appointed the first official Crown Jeweller by Queen Victoria in 1843, the firm holds an important place in British royal jewellery and goldsmithing history. The inscription provides an interesting connection to this heritage, although it does not by itself establish that Garrard retailed this particular basket.
