A magnificent Victorian wine ewer, translating the sculptural language of the Renaissance into richly worked sterling silver.
Made in London in 1867 by Goldsmiths’ Alliance Ltd, this substantial ewer is designed in the celebrated Cellini Revival style, distinguished by elaborate sculptural ornament, classical figures and densely layered Renaissance-inspired decoration.
The style takes its name from Benvenuto Cellini (1500–1571), the renowned Italian goldsmith, sculptor and writer whose patrons included Pope Clement VII. Cellini’s exuberant approach to metalwork had a lasting influence on European decorative art. During the nineteenth century, silversmiths revived this artistic language, combining classical mythology, sculptural figures and intricate ornament in highly distinctive silver objects.
The ewer has a tall, imposing silhouette, with an ovoid body raised upon a stepped circular pedestal foot. Almost every surface is enriched with high-relief decoration, hand chasing and applied cast elements. Classical masks, portrait heads, animals, fruit, flowers, scrolling foliage, beading and geometric borders are woven into an extraordinarily detailed composition.
Naturally developed patination has settled within the recessed ornament, creating a striking contrast with the raised silver surfaces and further emphasising the depth and sculptural quality of the decoration.
The body is divided by a series of horizontal ornamental bands. Oval portrait medallions and animal motifs unfold between scrolling foliage, while the shoulder is arranged in radiating panels, each containing a different classical head or decorative device. The broad, upward-sweeping mouth is equally elaborate, with detailed ornament continuing across both the inner and outer surfaces.
The tall scrolling handle is one of the most sculptural features of the piece. Its upper section is modelled as a female bust, the figure merging naturally into the curving handle below. Leaves, scrolls and geometric motifs continue along its length, echoing the mythological masks and figures across the body and giving the functional form the presence of a small sculpture.
The hallmarks remain clearly visible and include the “SS” maker’s mark, lion passant for sterling silver, London leopard’s head and the lowercase date letter “m” for 1867. The underside also retains the retailer’s inscription:
“G. SMITH, 35 KING ST., COVENT GARDEN”
This inscription records its original London retail provenance and adds an important historical detail to the piece.
Weighing approximately 808g, the ewer is substantial and beautifully constructed. The elaborate decoration remains crisp and well defined, while the silver retains a softly developed patina and warm antique lustre.

Condition
Very good antique condition. The structure remains sound and the extensive relief and chased decoration is clear and well preserved. The silver retains natural patination, surface marks and gentle signs of use consistent with its age.
