Flowers and curling leaves rise from the silver surface of this beautifully worked early Victorian teapot.
Made in London in 1845 by William Robert Smily, the teapot has a rounded body covered with richly modelled floral and foliate decoration. The petals, leaf veins and scrolling forms stand prominently above the surface, creating a striking play of light and shadow.
The decoration continues across the lid, which is topped with a sculptural flower-bud finial. A slender spout and elegant scroll handle extend from either side of the body, completing a design that is ornate yet well proportioned.
Weighing approximately 435g, this is a substantial small teapot with an estimated capacity of 500–600ml. Its interior has been cleaned and the raised decoration remains crisp, making it an appealing piece both to use and to display.
