An exceptional and beautifully engraved four-piece English sterling silver tea and coffee service, made in London in 1845 by the celebrated silversmiths Joseph Angell I and Joseph Angell II of Joseph Angell & Son.

Comprising a coffee pot, teapot, sugar bowl and cream jug, all four pieces bear matching London hallmarks for 1845 and the same maker’s mark. The survival of the complete service in such well-preserved condition is particularly remarkable.

The service is designed in the distinctive Gothic Revival style that flourished during the early Victorian period. Nineteenth-century designers reinterpreted the architectural language of the Middle Ages, incorporating pointed arches, columns, tracery and church-inspired silhouettes into luxurious domestic objects.

Each piece has an elegant faceted octagonal body with a tall, architectural profile. The tiered contours resemble miniature Gothic buildings, while the elevated covers, angular spouts and strongly defined borders reinforce the architectural character of the design. Even the handles and spouts are finely engraved, ensuring that the service remains richly detailed from every angle.

The surfaces are extensively hand engraved with an extraordinary variety of imagery. Birds and squirrels appear among flowering branches, while two different coats of arms decorate opposing panels, preserving a connection with the family for whom the service was originally commissioned.

The lower sections feature several finely engraved male and female figures influenced by nineteenth-century Orientalist imagery. Their varied poses, costumes and expressions are carefully observed and arranged within formal architectural frames. Natural motifs, heraldry and human figures are combined with remarkable balance, creating decoration that is elaborate yet highly ordered.

The sugar bowl and cream jug retain their rich original gilt interiors, providing a striking contrast with the cool white surface of the silver. The service shows only light signs of use, while the engraved figures, heraldic devices, animals and foliage remain notably crisp and clearly defined.
