Mappin & Webb Antique Sterling Silver Salver — Cellini Style, London 1910–1911
£1,950.00
Spread-winged eagles, Medusa masks and flowing foliage bring a richly detailed composition to this antique silver salver.
Made by Mappin & Webb and hallmarked in London for 1910–1911, this circular salver is crafted in sterling silver. Measuring approximately 27.5cm in diameter and weighing approximately 767g, it combines a substantial feel with finely worked decoration.
The broad pierced border is decorated in the Cellini style, with a Renaissance Revival character. Medusa mask medallions alternate with pairs of ornamental beasts flanking classical urns, interwoven with scrolling leaves, flowers and fruit. Raised relief and openwork create depth, catching the light across the intricate silverwork.
An engraved band encircles the centre, featuring spread-winged eagles among flowers, leafy garlands and flowing scrolls. Fine lines define the feathers and foliage, complementing the sculptural border. The central reserve is left plain, giving the elaborate decoration room to breathe.
The salver stands on three decorative feet with mask and foliate details. The underside bears the “MAPPIN & WEBB / LONDON” stamp alongside the British silver hallmarks.
A beautiful piece for serving tea or presenting refreshments, and equally suited to display on a sideboard or console table.
