Large Victorian Shell Cameo Brooch Hand-Carved Goddess Flora | 18K Gold Frame Circa 1880
£2,245.00
Description
A beautiful and finely carved Victorian shell cameo brooch dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880.
The cameo depicts the classical profile of a graceful female figure, commonly interpreted as Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers and spring. Her elegant features, flowing hair and delicate drapery are carved in crisp relief, demonstrating the refined artistry of traditional cameo carving.
The sculptor has skillfully used the natural layers of the shell to create warm brown accents in the hair ornaments, jewellery and garments. This natural coloration gives the portrait depth and vitality, highlighting the remarkable craftsmanship of hand-carved shell cameo work.
The cameo is mounted in a finely detailed 18K gold frame (tested) with classical decorative border. The scale of the piece is generous, making it both an impressive brooch and a striking wearable work of art.
Such large Victorian cameos were highly fashionable among the European elite during the 19th century and were often worn as statement jewellery or treasured as personal collectibles.

Large examples such as this are increasingly sought after by collectors of antique jewellery.
