John Cussell Sterling Silver Goblet with Gilt Interior — Lincoln Cathedral Replica, London 1978
£395.00
Flowing foliage and a warm gilt interior bring a historic English cup form to life.
Made by British silversmith John Cussell, whose workshop was based in Grantham, Lincolnshire, this sterling silver goblet bears London hallmarks for 1978. The leopard’s head identifies the assay office where it was tested and marked.
Modelled on a sixteenth-century communion cup held by Lincoln Cathedral, this twentieth-century replica preserves the restrained, dignified character of Elizabethan silver.
The gently flared bowl tapers towards a waisted stem, accented by a narrow ring and supported by a circular foot. Fine hammer marks catch the light across the silver surface, giving it the subtle texture of hand-worked metal.
An engraved foliate band encircles the upper bowl. Curling stems and small leaves with diagonal detailing sit between two fine horizontal lines, adding delicate decoration to the simple silhouette.
The interior is gilded, creating a warm contrast with the silver exterior. Beneath the foot are a winged motif, the inscription “LINCOLN CATHEDRAL” and the number “195”, recording the piece’s connection with the cathedral.
A distinctive piece of vintage British silver for display or a celebratory glass of wine.
