Edwardian Synthetic Ruby & Diamond Ring Chester c.1919 in 18ct Gold
DESCRIPTION:
A beautiful antique ring from the late Edwardian to early Art Deco era, assayed in Chester in 1919 (date letter T), crafted in solid 18ct gold with full English hallmarks.
The design features three round-cut synthetic rubies of striking pinkish-red hue — a vivid, luminous colour typical of early 20th-century laboratory-created stones. Between the rubies, two old-cut natural diamonds sparkle delicately, adding contrast and elegance to the warm gold setting.
The openwork gallery and clean carving showcase the craftsmanship of the period, while the smooth profile ensures comfortable wear. This is a timeless and collectible piece that carries both historical and aesthetic value.
DETAILS:
• Hallmarks: Full English marks for Chester, 18ct gold, 1919 (T)
• Gemstones: 3 synthetic rubies (each approx. <4mm; total c.0.75ct); 2 old-cut natural diamonds (total approx. 0.02ct)
• Metal: 18ct yellow gold
• Weight: 2.9g
• Size: UK O½ / EU 55 / US 7.25 / Inner diameter 17.5mm (HK 15.5)
• Condition: Excellent antique condition. All stones secure and original; no repairs or replacements.
A charming example of early synthetic gemstone jewellery — full of old-world charm, fine detailing, and rich colour.
Notes:
Synthetic rubies have been part of gem history for over a century. The first successful chemical synthesis dates back to the 19th century, with commercial production perfected by Verneuil around 1900. Early pieces like this ring mark a fascinating era when science and artistry came together to create timeless beauty.
