Antique Victorian 18ct Gold Natural Opal & Diamond Crescent Pendant Necklace Converted from a Victorian Brooch | Antique 10ct Gold Chain | England, circa 1890
£3,150.00
Among the most enduring symbols of Victorian jewellery, the crescent moon represented hope, protection and new beginnings. Its graceful silhouette captured the romance of the night sky and became one of the most cherished motifs of the late nineteenth century.
This exceptional Victorian crescent jewel, handcrafted in solid 18ct gold around 1890, beautifully reflects that tradition. Elegantly proportioned and remarkably refined, the crescent is set with fifteen graduated natural opals that gently increase in size towards the centre, creating a harmonious rhythm that perfectly follows the curve of the moon.
Each opal displays a lively play of colour, revealing flashes of blue, green, pink and warm orange as the light moves across the surface. At the heart of the composition sits the largest opal, measuring approximately 7 × 5 mm, drawing the eye while maintaining the delicate balance of the design.
Natural diamonds are thoughtfully placed between the opals, introducing subtle points of brilliance that resemble stars scattered across a moonlit sky. Fine milgrain edging frames each gemstone, demonstrating the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail that distinguish fine Victorian jewellery.
Based on its construction, the jewel was originally created as a Victorian crescent brooch and thoughtfully converted into a pendant during its lifetime. Such historic conversions are not uncommon among important antique jewels and reflect the way treasured pieces were adapted to suit changing fashions while preserving their original craftsmanship and beauty.
The pendant is paired with an antique 10ct gold chain, bearing its original 10K hallmark and fitted with a traditional antique tube clasp. Measuring approximately 45.5 cm (17.9 inches) in length, it is ready to wear as a complete necklace while remaining beautifully sympathetic to the period of the pendant itself.
More than one hundred and thirty years after it was created, this jewel continues to celebrate the elegance of the Victorian era through its luminous opals, delicate diamonds and timeless crescent form.
