Antique Platinum & Natural Diamond Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Sweetheart Brooch | c.1890–1915

The brightness of a star, the delicacy of thistle leaves and the sculptural curve of a bugle come together in a brooch of quiet dignity.

Crafted in platinum and set with natural diamonds, this antique sweetheart brooch depicts the regimental badge of The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). A five-pointed star rests between two sprays of Scottish thistles above a stringed bugle horn, forming an intricate openwork composition.

The central star is gently raised, with defined ridges extending along its five points. Natural diamonds follow the rays, catching the light between the sculpted platinum edges. Known in heraldry as a mullet, the star derives from the Douglas family arms, recalling the Earl of Angus, the first colonel of the old Cameronian regiment.

Scottish thistle sprays curve upwards around the star. Finely detailed leaves, pointed edges and small flower heads are interspersed with individually set diamonds, bringing a delicate rhythm of light to the foliage. The thistle, Scotland’s national emblem, gives the design a distinctive sense of place.

Below, the curved bugle is modelled with a flared bell, a narrowing tube and finely worked cords and knots. The stringed bugle horn reflects the traditions of light infantry and rifle regiments.

Open-backed diamond settings and pierced spaces lend lightness to the design. The cool lustre of platinum complements the diamonds, while fine surface wear adds a gentle sense of age to the detailed workmanship.

Regimental sweetheart brooches were worn by the wives, sweethearts and relatives of servicemen as expressions of affection, support and connection. Although this brooch’s original recipient and personal history are unknown, it belongs to that enduring tradition of meaningful jewellery.

The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) was formed in 1881 through the amalgamation of two earlier regiments. In 1968, it chose disbandment rather than amalgamation. Its distinctive star, thistles and bugle survive here in miniature, preserving a connection to a regiment that has passed into history.
