Antique 9K Gold Carnelian Cupid Intaglio Seal Fob Pendant | Late Georgian to Early Victorian | Peu à Peu

With patience and love, little by little, a heart is won.

Dating to approximately the first half of the 19th century, this antique seal fob holds a tender romantic message within its oval carnelian face. Warm 9K gold complements the stone’s orange-red tones, while the finely engraved scene tells a story of patience, devotion and affection.

The carnelian reveals soft shades of orange-red and reddish brown as light passes through it. Intaglio engraving brings depth to the figures and lettering, creating a detailed miniature scene within the oval setting.

At its centre stands a winged Cupid, holding a small pickaxe before a rising rocky formation topped by a heart. His profile, feathered wings and stepping stance lend movement to the composition, as though he is gradually working through the obstacles before him. A horizontal detail across his eye area suggests a possible blindfold, although this feature remains uncertain.

The rock may be read as a heart resistant to affection, with Cupid’s patient efforts offering a gentle metaphor for love overcoming that resistance.

Around the edge, the French inscription “PEU A PEU”—properly written Peu à peu—means “little by little.” Together, the words and imagery suggest that a heart may be won through tenderness, persistence and the quiet passage of time.

The seal face is engraved in reverse so that its lettering reads correctly when impressed into sealing wax. This intimate detail recalls the care once taken in sealing a letter, allowing a personal sentiment to accompany the written words.

Above the stone, symmetrical openwork gold scrolls form an elegant, sculptural mount. The suspension loop and oval base balance the design, allowing this historic object to be worn today as a distinctive pendant.

Visible traces of age and use remain on the gold and stone, lending warmth and character to this quietly romantic antique.
