Sculptural gold serpents and a finely engraved portrait come together in this characterful antique fob seal.
Crafted in 18K rose and green gold, the mount combines warm rosy tones with the subtle greenish hue of green gold. The serpent forms curve into an open framework, with finely textured scales following their contours and a snake’s head descending along the side. The flowing design evokes enduring affection and protection.
The base features radiating fluted decoration above a stepped border, lending an architectural quality to the small form. A rope-twist suspension loop completes the design, offering further detail when viewed from different angles.
Set into the underside is a rounded rectangular carnelian, its translucent reddish-orange colour revealing changing depths in the light. The stone is engraved in intaglio with the right-facing bust of a bearded gentleman, possibly inspired by a portrait of William Shakespeare. His facial profile, curling hair, beard and collared clothing are carefully defined, creating a detailed miniature portrait.
Weighing approximately 10.01g and standing 2.8cm high, the seal balances a pleasing sense of substance with an airy openwork mount. Fine surface wear and an aged patina lend warmth and character to this collectible piece, which can also be worn as a pendant on a suitable chain.
