1875 Victorian Sterling Silver Mug with Gilt Interior | James Dixon & Sons, Sheffield | Floral Relief & Heraldic Engravings
£565.00
Rich floral decoration and personal heraldic details bring distinctive character to this Victorian silver mug.
Made in Sheffield in 1875 by James Dixon & Sons, the mug combines a gently flared rim, rounded body and stepped circular foot with an elegant scroll handle.
The exterior is densely decorated with flowers, curling leaves and scrolling foliage in relief. Finely textured grounds emphasise the raised ornament, while vertical decorative bands lend structure to the flowing design. Light catches the petals and leaves, revealing the depth and detail of the silverwork.
Two oval cartouches retain heraldic engravings associated with a former owner. One bears a shield decorated with a diagonal band, circular motifs and a floral device; the other depicts an arm in armour holding a wreath. These engravings provide a personal connection to the mug’s history, although the family attribution has not been established.
Foliate details continue along the curved handle and around the circular foot, which is finished with a delicate beaded border. Inside, warm gilding contrasts beautifully with the silver exterior. Viewed from above, the interior also reveals the contours of the exterior relief decoration.
Measuring approximately 10.5cm high and weighing 170g, this is a compact and richly decorated example of Victorian silver, equally appealing as a table piece or displayed in a study or silver collection.
