DESCRIPTION
A rare and highly evocative Victorian memorial brooch, dated to circa 1876, beautifully crafted in 15K gold and set with a striking combination of natural garnet, pearls, and black onyx.
At the centre is a large natural garnet cabochon, richly coloured with a deep, wine-red hue. The stone is generously proportioned and beautifully polished, displaying excellent depth and glow — a gemstone widely favoured in the Victorian era for its associations with love, devotion, and remembrance.
Surrounding the garnet is an elegant border of natural pearls and black onyx, a classic and highly symbolic pairing often seen in 19th-century memorial jewellery. The contrast between the luminous pearls and the dark onyx creates a refined, solemn beauty that is both visually striking and historically meaningful.
The reverse of the brooch is especially significant, bearing original hand-engraved inscriptions, clearly legible and well preserved. These inscriptions record names and dates, transforming the piece from a decorative jewel into a deeply personal historical artefact and a tangible witness to Victorian sentiment and remembrance.
The brooch remains in excellent antique condition, with secure settings and finely preserved details. A rare survivor from the period, suitable both for elegant wear and for inclusion in a serious antique jewellery collection.
