Edwardian 18K Gold Amethyst, Old European Cut Diamond & Natural Pearl Antique Brooch | c.1900–1910

A striking Edwardian antique brooch centred with an exceptionally large and beautifully transparent natural amethyst, surrounded by alternating Old European Cut diamonds and luminous natural wild pearls.

Dating to approximately 1900–1910, the brooch is crafted in 18K gold, professionally tested although unmarked. The combination of richly coloured amethyst, bright white diamonds and beautifully white pearls creates an elegant and highly distinctive jewel characteristic of the Edwardian era.

At the centre is an impressive natural amethyst measuring approximately 23.1 × 17.4 × 12.4mm. The stone is generously proportioned and notably deep, with beautiful clarity and transparency. Its rich violet-purple colour changes subtly with the light, revealing brighter flashes of purple alongside deeper plum tones across its broad antique-style facets.

Based on its dimensions and proportions, the amethyst is estimated to weigh approximately 25–27 carats. As the gemstone remains mounted in its original setting, this is an estimated rather than an exact carat weight.

Surrounding the amethyst are 10 natural Old European Cut diamonds, alternating with 10 natural wild pearls in a beautifully balanced radiating halo.

The diamonds are particularly attractive: bright, white and beautifully transparent, with the broader facets and individual character associated with early European cutting. Measuring approximately 2.7–3.0mm each, their combined weight is estimated at approximately 0.80–0.90ct.

Between the diamonds are 10 natural wild pearls, approximately 3.2mm each. The pearls have a notably clean white colour with a fine, luminous natural lustre. Their soft pearly glow contrasts beautifully with the crisp brilliance of the diamonds and the saturated violet colour of the central amethyst.

Viewed from the side, the brooch reveals a finely constructed and wonderfully three-dimensional 18K gold setting. Each diamond and pearl is individually mounted around the central gemstone, while the amethyst is held within an open-backed setting, allowing light to pass through the stone and emphasise its clarity, depth and rich purple colour.

The reverse retains its original long brooch pin fitting, and the piece remains in very good antique condition, with light signs of wear consistent with its age.

Particularly desirable, the brooch is accompanied by its original antique jewellery box. The survival of the jewel together with its period box adds considerably to the completeness and collector appeal of this beautiful Edwardian piece.
