Do good. The future will take care of itself.

01 | A Street-Front Window and a Lifetime of Passion

The first thing that struck me about Duraid was his warm, ever-present smile.

His shop sits right on the street. Through the window, displays of museum-quality antiques stop passersby in their tracks. And if you look a little closer, you will almost always find a vase of fresh flowers at the centre of the table, quietly blooming among objects that have already lived through centuries.

During one of our conversations, Duraid spoke about his mother.

She loved flowers, so he grew up surrounded by them. She loved art, too, and would take him with her to art markets and exhibitions. Immersed in this world from an early age, the seeds of art and collecting quietly took root in him.

Later, Duraid chose economics. He went into academia, taught at university, and eventually moved to London, where he taught MBA courses.

Yet collecting never left his life. It was never simply a profession. It was a passion he had carried with him since childhood.

Over time, that passion became his life’s work. He founded ALJ Antiques Ltd. in London and became a member of LAPADA, the UK’s leading association for art and antiques dealers.

Today, he specialises in high-end Islamic, Middle Eastern, Asian and Colonial art — from fine metalwork, furniture and textiles to ceramics, ancient manuscripts, and antique arms and armour.

With his academic background and a highly discerning eye, he carefully researches and vets every object, seeking authentic pieces of genuine historical value from the Western market.

These objects are not simply beautiful.

They carry the quiet weight of time.

I understood Duraid’s choice.

I, too, left a long career in technology to follow something I loved.

Perhaps that is one reason his story has always resonated with me.

02 | Do Good. The Future Will Take Care of Itself.

Whenever I think of Duraid, one sentence comes to mind:

“Do good. The future will take care of itself.”

Do what is right with all your heart, without worrying about what lies ahead.

To me, it means doing something not because we want our names to be remembered, nor because we know where it will lead, but simply because the thing itself is worth doing well.

This belief has quietly shaped the way I build SHECH.

Researching the history behind every piece of antique jewellery.

Photographing jewellery in natural light, through spring, summer, autumn and winter, simply to capture its true, unadorned beauty.

Replying to every message and review with sincerity.

Writing a thank-you note to every client, with gratitude for their trust and choice.

And telling the stories hidden deep within time to those who truly understand them.

They may seem like small things.

But I have always believed that what lasts is rarely the noise around us. What lasts is the care we put into what we do, and the traces it leaves behind.

It is also the belief at the heart of SHECH:

Timeless beauty, quietly told.

Because what truly lasts is never the noise, but time itself.

03 | A Promise of 「善」

One day, I asked Duraid to give me a word.

He said:

Kindness.

He wanted this word to be his gift to me, and asked how to write it in Chinese.

I told him:

Shàn.

Looking at the many strokes of the character, I asked him, slightly worried:

“This is quite difficult to write. Would you like to choose an easier one?”

He shook his head without hesitation.

“No. This is the word I want to write the most, and this is the gift I want to give you.”

So he began to practise.

Again and again, carefully following each stroke, until he could write the character himself.

Watching him practise this unfamiliar Chinese character with such patience and sincerity touched me deeply.

Shàn.

In the ancient Chinese dictionary Shuowen Jiezi, 善 is associated with goodness and auspiciousness.

It speaks of what is good, beautiful and right.

But to me, 善 is also something deeper.

善 is the heart.

It is experiencing the complexities, joys and disappointments of life, and still choosing sincerity.

Still choosing kindness.

04 | A Gift in the Keeping of Time

That handwritten character 「善」 has now been transformed by SHECH into a piece of fine jewellery.

The pendant has been fully hallmarked at the London Assay Office, carrying the London marks and the 2026 date letter “B”.

It is the very first SHECH pendant from our One Word project — a small piece of jewellery carrying something much larger within it: a friendship, a shared belief, and the meeting of two cultures.

When the finished piece was ready, I gave it to Duraid.

His eyes lit up with joy, almost like a child receiving a favourite gift. He immediately asked me to help him put it on.

His smile said everything.

And he told me that he wanted to share the blessing behind this character — Shàn — with many more friends.

Perhaps that is how a word begins another life.

First spoken.

Then written by hand.

Then held in gold.

And finally passed from one person to another.

Every piece begins with a person.
Every story begins with kindness.
Every kindness lives on.

Do good. The future will take care of itself.

认真研究每一件古董珠宝背后的历史;

在春夏秋冬不同的自然光线下拍摄,只为了尽可能留下它最真实、未经修饰的美;

认真回复每一条留言和评价,珍惜每一次人与人之间的连接;

为每一位客人写一张感谢卡,感谢他们的信任与选择;

Timeless beauty, quietly told.

Kindness。
